Meningitis most commonly is from bacteria or viruses.
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Photophobia (sensitivity to light)
- Altered mental status
Diagnosis of meningitis occurs through a spinal tap. This procedure samples the fluid from around the spinal cord. The hospital laboratory then analyzes this fluid for signs of meningitis. Walk in Clinics don't usually perform spinal taps.
If you think you have meningitis, then walk in clinic is usually not equipped to diagnose this, and an emergency department is recommended immediately.
Bacterial meningitis can be life threatening.
