What is Bronchitis ?

Bronchitis is the irritation and inflammation of the lining of the bronchial passages in the lungs. Swelling can occur from many sources, but most commonly this occurs from viral upper respiratory infections. Approximately 90 % of bronchitis is viral in origin, the other 10 % is bacterial.

Bronchitis can also be broken down into Acute and Chronic. Persons with repeat episodes lasting for a period greater than 2 years are considered chronic. Acute bronchitis are cases lasting less than 6 weeks.

Treatment for bronchitis :

Is often symptomatic, meaning you treat the symptoms such as cough, until the symptoms go away. Sometimes bronchitis treatment needs to be more aggressive such as in persons with poor health, or those that are very young.

Symptoms such as shortness of breath, rapid breathing, chest pain, fever, rapid heart rate need to be evaluated by a health care professional immediately. Infants and toddlers with suspect bronchitis may actually have a more serious condition called bronchiolitis. Untreated this can cause scarring to the lungs that leads to a life time of lung problems.
