Pertussis
Highly communicable disease that lasts for
many weeks and is typically manifested in children with
paroxysmal spasms of severe coughing, whooping, and vomiting.
Caused by Bordetella pertussis, a gram-negative
coccobacillus. Often presents much like the common cold,
with no fever, but progresses to severe coughing. Dangerous in
young infants.
