Infants younger than one month old are at a higher risk for severe infection because their immune systems are fully functional. In newborns and infants, usual signs and symptoms of fever, headache, and neck stiffness may be difficult to notice. The infant may simply appear fussy, inactive, and vomiting or feeding poorly.
Evaluation of a newborn or infant is best performed in a hospital emergency department. Walk in clinics are not equipped for this evaluation. If you think you or someone else may have meningitis, see a physician as soon as possible.
